Society tends to attribute too much of obesity to laziness and gluttony whereas we should consider it as a disease process. It is not a defect in the personality or character of the patient.

- First line treatment consisted of dietary, exercise and behavioural modification with small resultant weight loss.
- Second line treatment is offered by drugs such as reductil and xenical.
These should precede surgery; however surgery offers the only method of sustained weight loss.
